So, I’m working on this essay for my English class, and I’ve hit all my main points, but it’s still coming up short of the required length. It’s supposed to be a 5-page analysis of symbolism in "The Great Gatsby," focusing on the green light, the valley of ashes, and the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg. Right now, I’m at about 3.5 pages, and I’m kinda stuck on how to beef it up without just adding fluff.
I’ve already gone through each symbol and their meanings, how they relate to the American Dream, and their impact on the characters, especially Gatsby. Here’s what I was thinking to add more content:
- Maybe dive deeper into each symbol’s historical and societal context?
- Include more examples from the text showing how these symbols are presented and their effects on the plot?
- Discuss other interpretations of these symbols by critics or in popular culture?
I want to make sure whatever I add contributes meaningfully to the essay. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to expand it in a way that adds value and doesn’t just feel like filler?
